Where I Have Been?

After a few years staying at home with my children and then teaching pre-k again, last year I went back to first grade. It had been 10 years since I had taught first grade. With Common Core, a new grade level, no teacher assistant, and many other family factors, life was crazy.

I posted more details at my other blog. If you'd like to read it, click here.

I hope you'll see more of me this year and maybe the blog will get the make over it desperately needs. :)

Coming Soon: A New Name!

Little Fun; Little Learning has been around for a few years. While it has been helpful in providing resources for parents and teachers, Revka and I feel that this site could be better with a more user-friendly set-up. LFLL was set up during our early blogging years and it is time for a makeover! I have purchased the new domain for the site. Hopefully after the first of the year, Revka and I can brainstorm on a new design to unveil a more resourceful website. Stay tuned!

St. Patrick's Day Has Been Moved

Eliza at Babylune just let me know that St. Patrick's Day has been moved. Sources say the Roman Catholic Church changed it to Saturday, March 15th to avoid conflict with Holy Monday that falls on March 17th.

This is new news to me. Did you already know about the change?

It's Me Again - edited 8/17/07

I bet you thought that you had heard the last from me. *smile*

Actually, I met Karen in real life for the first time today. She is at her parents' home for about a week. They happen to live about 45 minutes from us, so the girls and I traveled down that way today. While we were visiting, we found out that her father's computer has a very strict firewall set up, so she cannot log in to Little Fun. Karen asked me to let you know that she will return to regular posting today - oops! that was supposed to say "next week"!

It was so nice to meet Karen. She is the same in person as she is on her blogs or on the telephone, and our kids really enjoyed playing together. Karen's father took the kids for a ride in the wagon that attaches to the back of his riding lawn mower, which I thought I would mention in case any of you have that capability but just hadn't thought of the idea. Also, hayride season will be upon us shortly. I'm going to plan to take my girls on a hay ride. I know they would enjoy it.

Have a great weekend. Karen will be back in no time.

And So I Take My Leave

As Karen mentioned, I have passed Little Fun; Little Learning on to her. I am excited to see what she will do with this blog, and I wholeheartedly believe that she has great ideas and can make this a wonderful and informative place for us parents of "littles." I have certainly enjoyed the time I have put into Little Fun, and I will miss it.

Why then am I giving it up? Between my other blogs, my church activities, normal home life, and preparing to homeschool my girls this fall, I was not able to give my best to any of my responsibilities, and Mr. Incredible and I decided this was the best place for me to cut back. Thank you, guys, for all the good times. You are a great bunch, and I will miss interacting with you. I'll be dropping by to read Karen's posts and to comment as I feel the urge. You can still visit me over at The Porch Light, my personal blog. Take care, and remember to enjoy your child.

Here's the Scoop

Well folks, Revka promised changes and here they are. You'll be seeing a lot of me around here and a bit less of Revka. Revka has done a super job getting this site started and getting preschool information out to you, but now she has a lot going on. The over achiever that she is, she is trying to do too much. She has turned the reigns over to me. Revka and I met on the internet and over the past 9 months or so a beautiful friendship has developed.

So, you may be wondering who I am. Some of you may have noticed some guest posts on here from Karen. That's me. The work I'm most commonly known for is Thrifty Mommy. I'm also a teacher. I have taught preschool through 8th grade, although I prefer working with children in pre-k and elementary school. The last few years I have gone between working part-time in preschools and working at home. Right now, I am working at home. I have two children. Alligator (girl) is 4 and Cuddlebug (boy) is 2.

I hope to bring you thematic and seasonal ideas, songs, fingerplays, and different fun preschool learning activities. Let me know if there is something specific you're looking for. I am looking forward to meeting you all. :)

Karen

And the Winner Is...

Thank you to all who participated in my little contest for the child's prize pack. I wish I could give every one of you a prize, but, unfortunately, I can't. So I used a random number generator this morning, and it selected the number corresponding to the comment left by Heather, whom I have already contacted.

Thank you again for playing along, and I hope you stop by again to see what fun activities and educational ideas are offered here. Also, if you would leave me a comment to let me know what you think about my idea to start a Carnival of Family Fun, I would really appreciate it. The Carnival would feature both your ideas for having fun together as a family and your stories about fun time you spent together as a family. I'd like to know if you think this is a good idea, don't care about it, or think it is totally lame.

For "The Littles" - Closed

Click to see the winner announcement. I would also appreciate your input on an idea I have.

If you don't already know, there is a huge Dog Days of Summer Bloggy Giveaway going on hosted by Shannon of Rocks in My Dryer. Absolutely H.U.G.E!!!!! Over 400 participants! At RS Designs, I am offering one lucky person the chance to choose 3 out of 4 options to make over their blog, and at The Porch Light, I am giving away my piano solo CD, He Giveth More Grace. My design partner at RS Designs, Linda, is giving away 2 free headers at Mama's Coffee Corner, her personal blog. Now I'm adding Little Fun; Little Learning to the list.

In keeping with the theme of this blog (focusing on fun activities and educational ideas for the littles - children ages 0-5), I am giving away 2 workbooks (your choice of preschool or kindergarten), sidewalk chalk, a box of crayons, and a book (either a coloring book or a story book - not sure yet). (Sorry: no international participants for this one, please, though your comments are still welcome). {Added for clarification: this is one big prize pack, not individual prizes.}

Rules:

  • Leave a comment no later than 11:59 p.m. Thursday night.
  • Make sure you leave some way for me to contact you: an e-mail address or working URL would be great.
  • One entry only, please. Multiple entries will be deleted, leaving everyone on a level playing field.
That's all there is to it! Have fun!

What If This Were Your Child?

Love for Parker

Parker is a special little boy with huge medical problems: he not only suffers from Downs Syndrome but also from larger, more critical issues. His family's insurance provider has run true to stereotypical form and has refused to assist with medical devices of life-and-death importance for Parker. Parker's family faces ever-mounting medical bills with only the prospect of more bills since Parker needs more surgery.

Melody of Slurping Life decided to do something to help Parker and his family and is holding a fund raiser from July 23 through July 27. To generate more interest and add greater incentive, Melody is also giving away prizes and has asked others, including myself, to donate prizes as well. Prizes include, courtesy of Hewlett-Packard, a digital camera/printer/accessories package retailing for approximately $430. To be eligible to win a prize, you must donate a minimum of $2, though a larger contribution would certainly be appreciated. All donations will go directly to an account accessible by Parker's parents.

As I mentioned, Melody contacted me about donating a prize, and I was happy to have been asked to be a part of this fund raiser. I am donating a custom website design update from RS Designs (my design website), valued at $55 - $120 (depending on options chosen). The winner of this prize may choose 3 of the following options:
  1. Web site color change (change the colors of your existing template, including images)
  2. New background image
  3. Custom sidebar image
  4. Custom header
  5. Custom advertising banner.
Make a note to stop by Slurping Life sometime during July 23 through July 27. If you can post about this yourself, that would be great. The more people who are aware of this, the more people who will contribute. Whatever you can do to help is greatly appreciated.
